Scion FUSE Concept

Developed by Calty Design Research - Toyota's North American design studio based in Newport Beach, Calif. - and Scion's Advanced Product Strategy Team, plus built by Five Axis of Huntington Beach, Calif., the Scion FUSE was designed to be a new sports coupe icon. Its purpose was to combine entertainment, digital technology, and versatility into a package with a strong visual presence. Its styling intended to expand the performance capabilities of entry-level sport coupes. "The idea behind the Scion FUSE sports coupe was to reflect the limitless potential and creative envelope that encapsulates the essence of what Scion products stand for," said Mark Templin, Scion vice president. "Since the launch of Scion three years ago, designers have mastered the understanding of what motivates and stirs Scion buyers, and have transferred this knowledge into the FUSE." The exterior of the FUSE was the work of Calty designers Alex Shen and Bob Mochizuki, who wanted to create a powerful performance statement. For inspiration, they looked towards the "HAKO" super GT racing cars from Japan, commonly known as the JGTC series. From the side, the FUSE has a low, aggressive stance with a wraparound window reminiscent of a racing helmet, providing a magnificent panoramic view. Additionally, the visor-like windshield is perfectly complemented by a prominent C-pillar, giving a feeling of protection and safety.
