The SEAT Altea is a compact multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) with a sporty design, produced by the Spanish automaker SEAT since 2004. Designed by the Italian Walter de Silva, the first Altea was launched in 2004, with its new corporate look similar to that of the third-generation Toledo, featuring a larger boot. Later came the extended version, the Altea XL, which was first presented at the 2006 Paris Motor Show. In 2007, the Altea Freetrack with 4WD and higher suspension was unveiled.
On 21 August 2015, SEAT announced the discontinuation of both Altea and Altea XL. While there is no direct replacement planned for the Altea, the company is transitioning towards SUVs by launching its own model based on the SEAT León, which is called the Ateca. According to CEO Luca de Meo, the Ateca is the "replacement of the Altea". In the UK, a total of 439 Altea cars and 445 Altea XLs were sold in 2014.
When the Altea was released a few years later than its competitors, it sold above expectations, with more than 31,223 sold in the first year. The five-seater Altea aims to appeal to family-oriented individuals and to portray a more sporty look. It is based on Volkswagen Group's A5 (PQ35) platform. A unique design feature of the Altea is the 'vertical parked' windscreen wipers, which are designed to improve pedestrian safety. There are six trim levels: Essence (unavailable in the UK), Reference, Reference Sport, Stylance, Sport (unavailable in the UK) and FR. Engine options start from 1.4 85 hp and range up to the 2.0 FR Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) delivering 125 kilowatts (170 PS; 168 bhp). Gearbox choices include five or six-speed manual, five-speed tiptronic automatic, and six or seven-speed Direct-Shift Gearbox. The Altea takes its name from the Spanish city of Altea.
