Seat Ibiza Cupra 1.9 TDI

The Ibiza Mk3, assembled on the PQ24 platform as the Volkswagen Polo Mk4, had a sporty and performance-oriented design by Italian designer Walter de Silva. The two variants of the hot hatch—the Ibiza FR and Cupra—were a substitute for the lack of Polo GTI, which was only released in 2006. It was initially produced in SEAT's Martorell, Spain plant, but in 2002 the Volkswagen Group ordered the transfer of 50,000 units annually to the Slovaquia plant.

The model was larger than closer generations, providing space for five adults, plus a quite spacious boot. The high standard trim was highly praised by automotive magazines, with What Car? magazine dubbing it "Car of the Year" in 2003, followed by "Supermini of the Year" for three consecutive years.

The SEAT Ibiza Mk3 was also used as a police car and rally car. Prior to 2005 facelift, the model offered trim levels Award, S, SX, Stylance, Reference, Signo, Stella, Sport, FR and Cupra. Graphical changes were made in 2006, along with new trim levels (Reference, Stylance, Freerider, Sportrider, Sport, DAB Sport, Formula Sport, FR and Cupra). The engines received higher power with the 1.2 12v and 1.4 16v and a new turbocharged diesel version, 1.4 litre TDI. The Cupra and FR TDI had a 1.9 litre Pumpe-Düse diesel engine with 130 PS and 165 PS, respectively.

Safety

During the Euro NCAP assessment in 2002, the SEAT Ibiza Mk3 obtained a 4 stars rating.
