Skoda Octavia Combi 4x4
The Škoda Octavia of the first generation was released in November 1996 and built at the factory in Mladá Boleslav, Czech Republic. This model was offered in hatchback and estate styles only.
In the UK, it went on sale in 1998 and proved to be a desirable car for its good build quality, refinement, and affordability. Nonetheless, it could not quite reach the popularity of renowned large family vehicles like the Ford Mondeo or Vauxhall Vectra. It was especially attractive for the self-employed taxi driver on account of its reasonable price, size, and reliability.
In 2000, the original Octavia underwent a facelift. This model was still marketed to certain markets - including Germany, West Europe, and Asia - as the Octavia Tour, while the newer version got known as the Octavia. Other regions, including Greece and India, adopted their own names for this vehicle, such as Octavia5 and Laura.
Both the hatchback and estate versions of the renewed Octavia featured a 4x4 wheel drive. This system used the Haldex Traction clutch and gave the car higher ground clearance and a roomier fuel tank (63-litre), in comparison to the standard front-wheel-drive cars with their 55-litre tanks. The 4x4 was compatible with the 1.8 T 150 bhp petrol engine, 1.9 TDI 90 bhp and 100 bhp diesel engines, and the 2.0 L petrol engine - all with 5-speed manual gearbox, plus a 6-speed manual gearbox for the 1.9 TDI-PD 100 bhp diesel variant. Another 6-speed manual model, the 1.9 TDI-PD 131 bhp, also existed but was only available with front-wheel-drive.
The Octavia vRS, the fastest and most successful of them all, had a 1.8-litre turbocharged engine that produced a power of 180 bhp. In 2002, Škoda also manufactured a commemorative series of 100 WRC Replica cars which included special characteristics such as rally decals, ESP, xenon lights, and heated front seats.
