Skoda Octavia SLX
The Škoda Octavia SLX, first released in November 1996, was built at the modernised Škoda factory in Mladá Boleslav, Czech Republic. This first generation was made available in tables hatchback or estate styles only.
In the United Kingdom, sales of the mid-size car quickly gained traction with buyers who valued its solidity, refinement and value for money, though it still struggled to dethrone established large family cars from manufacturers such as Ford and Vauxhall. Due to its great value and advantageous leasing agreements, the Octavia SLX was also widely used by the self-employed within the taxi trade.
The Octavia SLX underwent a facelift in 2000; being still manufactured and marketed in some markets, even after the second generation was introduced in 2004. In particular, West Europe and Asia still saw the car marketed as the Octavia Tour. In some markets, such as Greece and India, the facelifted model was referred to as the Octavia5 and Laura, respectively.
The major improvements of this facelifted model were both the independent rear suspension, and the improved interior - providing increased space, and higher quality design and materials.
', The Octavia SLX was also available with a variable 4x4 wheel drive version for both estate and hatchback models, using the Haldex Traction clutch. This setup yielded higher ground clearance, a larger fuel tank, and also came with a range of engine options from 1.8 T 150 bhp (112 kW; 152 PS) petrol, to the 1.9 TDI-PD (Pumpe-Düse) 100 bhp (75 kW; 101 PS) diesel. The most popular of these had to be the vRS, as this was the top-level and quickest specification, and made use of a 1.8-litre straight-4 turbocharged engine which produced 180 bhp (134 kW; 182 PS). To differentiate themselves, Škoda even produced a limited number of 100 WRC Replica Cars worldwide in 2002 - featuring white paint, rally decals, and a range of additional accessories such as ESP, xenon lights and heated front seats.
