Smart ForTwo Coupe
The Smart ForTwo is the original car released by the German-based vehicle company, Smart, in 1998, coined as the City Coupe. When the company released additional models, it was given the name ‘ForTwo’. The purpose of the micro compact car was meant mainly for urban use in crowded European cities, where parking is scarce and fuel economy is of great importance. At only 250cm in length, three Smart ForTwos could fit into one regular-sized car’s parking space.
To accommodate passenger safety, a solid steel ‘Tridion’ serves as the frame and forms the basic shape of the car, with interchangeable plastic body panels over the exterior. Additionally, weighing only 730kg, it is also one of the lightest cars in the European market. To maximize the minimal crumple zone at the front, the Smart ForTwo has an engine located at the back of the vehicle.
The engine ranges are equipped with 3 cylinder turbocharged motors, with 599cc or increased displacement to 698cc. It is available in two power variations, 37 kW (50 PS) or 45 kW (61 PS), with a 799cc turbodiesel and 30 kW (41 PS). The Smart ForTwo provides a manual transmission, with either a floor-mounted shifter or steering-mounted paddles, that then is fed to a servo-operated clutch to shift the sequential automatic gearbox. On average, the gasoline model reached 4.7L/100km and the diesel model at 3.4L/100km.
The Smart ForTwo is available in several different models, such as the base ‘Pure’, sporty mid-spec ‘Pulse’, luxury top-spec ‘Passion’ and the ‘Brabus’ tuned version. These models are all available in either coupé or cabrio form, with a targa-style removable roof panel for the latter. However, due to the small size, parking the Smart ForTwo by the side in parallel slots is a dangerous manoeuvre. As such, this type of parking has been declared illegal in Munich, Germany.
