SsangYong Motor Company is a South Korean carmaker. It's the fourth largest car manufacturer in the country, which focuses primarily on SUV models. The company is headquartered in Seoul. Its name "SsangYong" is translated as "double dragons". more
The company was established in 1963 as Ha Dong-hwan Motor Company after the merger of two companies, Ha Dong-hwan Motor Workshop and Dongbang Motor Co. It started its business with the production of jeeps for the US Army. In 1977, the company’s name changed to Dong-A Motor and it specialized in production of trucks, buses and special purpose vehicles. In 1986, SsangYong Business Group tool over the company and renamed it to SsangYong Motor.
In 1991, the company started to cooperate with Daimler-Benz to create a new SUV. As a result, the Musso model appeared. It was first sold by Mercedes-Benz and later by SsangYong. Later, some Daimler designs were used for building Korando, Rexton, Chairman H and Kyron models. In 1997, Daewoo Motors bought the controlling stake in the company and in 2004, Chinese automaker SAIC took it over. In 2011, a 70% stake was sold to Indian Mahindra & Mahindra Limited.
