StudioTorino CoupeTorino

As part of the event “Turin World Design Capital 2008,” StudioTorino presented a cultural, non-profit project called StudioTorino CoupeTorino. This project aimed to transform series and off-set automobiles with reliable technical solutions while maintaining the car’s identity. Mercedes SL spider was chosen for this project which translated into a classic coupé. To aid in the design of this model, StudioTorino cooperated with Istituto di Arte Applicata e Design (IAAD) and received informal advice from the Mercedes Design Center in Como and Professor Peter Pfeiffer. The project included a 1:4 scale maquette that was personally modeled by Alfredo Stola, as well as a photographic exhibit showcasing the developmental stages from conception to realization. Additionally, the project featured an in-depth study on the construction methodology and aerodynamics that was used to develop a perfectly functional prototype with series automobile reliability. The style of StudioTorino CoupeTorino was directed by Alfredo Stola with help from Piotr Degler Jablonski, student intern, who participated in the creation of the model as part of his final internship. In order to maintain the car's identity with a touch of Italian flair, the initial research focused on two fastback and a traditional coupé. On July 9, 2008, the design choice was discussed in an informal meeting at the Mercedes Design Center in Como. The Première of StudioTorino CoupeTorino was displayed on December 12, 2008 at the Turin Gallery exhibit entitled “Bespoke Coachwork.” The exhibit included a 1:4 scale model of the SL, without wheels, and done in a monochromatic bronze on a transparent platform as if a sculpture.
