Subaru 1000 1965 posters

Subaru 1000 The Subaru 1000 marked a big milestone in automotive history when it was first released by Fuji Heavy Industries in 1966 - it was Japan's first mass produced front wheel drive car. Prior to this, Subaru had mostly produced rear engined, rear wheel drive cars, such as the Subaru 360, Sambar, and 450. The 1000 sported a water-cooled, horizontally opposed four cylinder engine, with overhead valves operated by pushrods, reportedly inspired by the engines used in Germany's Hansa-Goliath cars. This type of engine has since become a signature of the Subaru legacy. In terms of the car's design, it featured unique inboard drum brakes up front, lack of a traditional heater core, and a hybrid suspension system that featured torsion bars working in combination with coil springs like the Subaru 360. At the start of the seventies, the 1000 made way for the 1100, affectionately known as the Star in the United States and other export markets.
