Subaru Alcyone SVX

The Alcyone SVX, also known in the United States as simply the SVX, was a mid-sized sports-touring coupe sold by Subaru from 1991 to 1997. Subaru introduced the SVX in the United States in July of 1991, following that up with a Japanese market introduction in September of that same year. The model was designed and marketed as a replacement for the company's aging Alcyone XT and Alcyone XT6 coupes.

History and sales

US sales of the SVX were good and reached 3,859 units in 1993, but it is estimated that Subaru had intended to sell 10,000 SVXs each year. However, sales began to decrease significantly in the following years and only 640 units were sold in 1997, leading Subaru to discontinue the vehicle. In total, 14,257 of the cars were sold in the United States, with approximately 25,000 sold worldwide. In Europe, 2,478 SVXs sold (with 854 going to Germany) and around 7,000 of all SVXs were right-hand drive models.

Body

In comparison to the boxy XT, the SVX featured curvy, almost futuristic lines created by Giorgetto Giugiaro of ItalDesign, and a unique all-glass canopy with 2-piece side windows. The windows were split about 2/3 of the way from the bottom, running parallel to the upper curve of the door frame. These half-windows are typically seen on vehicles with "gull-wing" or "scissor" doors such as the Lamborghini Countach and the De Lorean DMC-12.

Drivetrain

Unlike the previous model which was offered with either a turbocharged 4-cylinder or a naturally aspirated 6-cylinder, the SVX was produced with just one engine, the EG33 model 3.3 litre flat-six. The engine was an indirect evolution of the ER27 model, 2.7 litre version which powered the Alcyone XT6. This new 3.3 litre variant was outfitted with dual overhead camshafts and 4 valves per cylinder, and had a compression ratio of 10.0:1, delivering 230 hp (172 kW) at 5,400 rpm and 228 ft·lbf (309 Nm) of torque at 4,400 rpm. Contrary to Subaru's newer models, which are all sold with all-wheel drive, the SVX was sold both in all-wheel and front-wheel drive. Despite the car's strong power upon its debut, the SVX was heavy at approximately 3600 pounds (1600 kg) and was only available with a 4-speed automatic transmission, both of which had a negative effect on its performance.
