Subaru Impreza Sedan WRX

The Subaru Impreza WRX is a turbocharged version of the Subaru Impreza, an all-wheel drive automobile available as a sedan or wagon. It has become a popular choice among enthusiasts for its high performance, great handling, and relatively affordable price. Introduced in Japan in 1992, it soon followed in Australia and Europe with a turbocharged 2.0L flat-4 engine producing up to 260 PS. Along with a more powerful engine, the WRX received wider tires and larger brakes, as well as firmer, higher quality suspension components than the standard Impreza. The WRX design was based on Subaru's Impreza WRC, and was given instructions to create a car that "looked like it was doing 100 mph, even when it was standing still in a car park". Subaru Tecnica International (STi) then developed low-volume versions with even greater power and grip, producing 280 PS from new. With the release of the second generation Impreza in 2000, power increased to 250 PS in the Japanese home market, although, due to emissions regulations, it was detuned to 218 PS in Europe and 227 hp in North America. The addition of a 5-door wagon model also met with brisk sales. With the introduction of a mild facelift in 2002, the power improved to 225 PS in Europe. To celebrate the debut of STi in the European market, 1,000 special "Prodrive" models were released. In mid-2005, the performance models, with the "jet intake and wings" grille first seen on the Subaru R1, were released, along with new headlights and bumpers. A larger 2.5L engine was adopted for all export markets, producing 230 PS and 320 Nm of torque. In 2006, this engine was awarded International Engine of the Year. It is also used in the Subaru Forester XT and re-badged Saab 9-2X.
