Subaru Legacy Sedan

The Subaru Legacy is a mid-size car first launched by the Japanese car manufacturer Subaru in 1989. It is the bigger and more glamorous sister to the Subaru Leone/Loyale. The Legacy was equipped with a 2.0 L engine and came with all-wheel drive as standard, becoming increasingly popular in Australia, where it is also known as the Subaru Liberty. In fact, the model has received two prestigious awards in Australia — Wheels magazine’s Car of the Year for 1994 and 1998. Additionally, the turbocharged version of the Legacy in the region was once touted to be the quickest car for under $100,000 door-to-door. In 2003-2004, the updated BL/BH Legacy chassis was crowned Car of the Year Japan. The North American market entrance of the Legacy happened in 1990, when both sedan and wagon models with front and all-wheel drive engine options were released. A turbocharged sedan was released the following year and a special edition turbocharged wagon was made available in 1992. All turbo models eventually had to be discontinued with the introduction of the second gen Legacy by 1995. However, the Subaru Outback model, aided by successful marketing campaigns, was able to stop the dropping sales — leading to General Motors investing in the model. Additionally, the GT trim package that began with the 1994 wagon eventually progressed into full-fledged upgrades in 1996 with the introduction of a DOHC 2.5 L engine and was brought back again to North America with the launch of the 2005 model. Limited editions of this model came with leather trim as well as a sunroof.
