Subaru Legacy Station Wagon

The Subaru Legacy was unveiled by Japanese automaker Subaru in February 1989 as an upgraded version of their Leone/Loyale model. This vehicle featured a 2.0 L engine at launch and was provided with all-wheel drive as an option before becoming the standard across the world. In Australia, the model is known as the Subaru Liberty and has been awarded 'Wheel Magazine's Car of the Year' twice; once in 1994 and again in 1998. Upon the release of its turbocharged versions, the Legacy was said to be the fastest car offered on the Australian market for less than $100,000. In Japan, the BL/BH chassis Legacy was revered as the 'Car of the Year' for 2003-2004. In North America, the Legacy was introduced in 1990 with 2.2 L engine available in sedan and wagon models. 1991 saw the arrival of turbocharged Legacy sedans, while wagon models arrived in 1992 as special editions; the latter were eventually discontinued in 1995 during the introduction of the second generation. To reverse the Legacy's declining popularity in North America, Subaru employed clever marketing to launch the Outback model and attract investment. A GT model, initially available as a trim package for the wagon in 1994, became an entire upgrade in 1996 sporting the new DOHC 2.5 L engine. With Limited editions available, offering leather trim and a sunroof, the GT model continues to be a fixture in the Legacy lineup. After a 10-year hiatus, Subaru brought back the turbocharged version to the North American market in 2005 to the delight of its fans.
