Subaru Outback

The Subaru Outback was first introduced in the United States in 1996 as an all-wheel drive, body-cladded Legacy station wagon with higher ground clearance and off-road tires - famously marketed using the phrase "The World's First Sport Utility Wagon". While this phrase may be trademarked, it is not entirely accurate, since American Motors had already released the AMC Eagle station wagon in 1979. With the SUV craze at its peak, Subaru of America executives created the Outback to meet a demand for something more SUV-like than its station wagons, and it was a success. Further iterations of the Outback, like the Outback Sport (based on the Subaru Impreza five-door hatchback) and the Outback SUS (for "Sport Utility Sedan") followed, making the model popular enough that other automakers followed suit with similar raised four wheel drive station wagons as stop-gaps before their SUVs. In Japan, the Outback was available from 1995 as the Subaru Legacy Grandwagon and a sedan version was added with the introduction of its own model in 2000, which also offered a horizontally-mounted six-cylinder engine. At its highest trim level, a 200W McIntosh stereo system was standard from 2001 to 2003 - one of the only vehicles ever factory-equipped with a McIntosh stereo system. In 2003, with the debut of the fourth-generation Legacy, the Outback name is now an international model with the launch of the second-generation Outback wagon, which featured a 3.0 L H6 engine.
