Toyota Avensis Sedan

The Toyota Avensis was introduced as a successor to the Carina E in 1997 for the 1998 model year and has been manufactured ever since in Burnaston, Derbyshire, United Kingdom. Available in the form of four-door saloon, five-door hatchback and estate, the Avensis has been a major competitor to the Volkswagen Passat in Europe. In 2003, an all-new version was launched with an abundance of driver engagement and familiar powertrains that formerly powered the previous Avensis. The 1.6 L, 1.8 L and 2.0 L petrol engines, as well as the 2.0 L turbodiesel, were all incorporated as well as the addition of a 2.4 L four cylinder reserve from the Camry to the range. This was also the first time the Avensis was exported to Japan. Whereas the Toyota Camry wagon had been discontinued, the Avensis wagon was exported to New Zealand in two available 1.8L and 2.0L versions. In the 2004 European Car of the Year contest, the model was just short of the top 3, taken by the Fiat Panda, Volkswagen Golf and Mazda3. Following its withdrawal, the Avensis officially became the largest Toyota saloon sold in Europe. In Spain, two models are available: Sol and Executive, with the latter equivalent to the UK's T Spirit. Ireland also offers four trim levels: Aura, Strata, Luna and Sol. The original 115 PS (85 kW) D-4D engine was updated with the addition of a 2.2 L D-4D running at 150 PS (110 kW) and 177 PS (130 kW). Additionally, the motorcuts now come without "D-4D" and "2.0" badging on the wings and tailgate respectively. The Avensis Verso remained available until 2006, when it was replaced by the popular 2.2 L D-4D engine.
