Toyota Corolla Verso VVTi

The ninth-generation Corolla (NZE120/ZZE120) was released in August 2000 and featured edgier styling and a longer 102.4 in (2600 mm) wheelbase which was built on a shortened Toyota Vista platform. To avoid being in a higher tax bracket in Japan, the Corolla's width is limited to 67 in (1700 mm) - which is somewhat narrower than other European competitors. The North American model, however, has a length that is the same as Corolla Altis. It made its US debut during the Spring of 2002 for the 2003 model year, with available trim levels of CE, S, and LE. Including a torsion bar suspension and drum brakes in the rear, the Corolla XRS model, which was later introduced in 2004, was geared toward a sportier market. This came with a high-revving 170 hp (127 kW) 127 ft·lbf (172 N•m) 2ZZ-GE engine and 6 speed manual transmission from the Toyota Celica GT-S and Lotus Elise. The station wagon model is called the Toyota Corolla Fielder in Japan, while the five-door is known as Toyota Corolla Runx or Toyota Allex, and launched in 2001. The Corolla Spacio (Verso in Europe) also moved on the new platform, equipped with a third row of fold-down seating. Taking it further, the Corolla has also spawned another multi-purpose vehicle, the Matrix, which is sold in Canada and the United States as well as used as the basis of the Pontiac Vibe. For certain Asian countries, two versions of the Corolla model are available; the Corolla Altis, which is targeted at consumers who prefer comfort without having to purchase the more luxurious Toyota Camry, and the Corolla sedan and Corolla Fielder which are only built in Brazil. The Corolla sedan in Brazil is the same as the US model. On the other hand, the Corolla Fielder has different styling from the Japanese version. There are two versions of engine available for the Altis - the 108 bhp 1.6 and the 134 bhp 1.8. For the 2004 model year, the Altis got an upgrade with the addition of VVT-i to its 1ZZ-FE engine, as well as a new grille, tail lights, and alloys. In Thailand, the Toyota Corolla is alternatively called Toyota Limo for its lower spec taxi versions, not to be confused with the taxi version of Toyota Vios which is also known as Toyota Limo in Indonesia.
