Toyota FT-86G Sports Concept

Sports-car devotees will have a great chance to experience Toyota's future with the unveiling of the Toyota FT-86G Sports Concept at the 2010 Australian International Motor Show. This eye-catching show car serves as a preview of the production model that could add charm and energy to the Toyota brand after 2012. The vehicle gets its name from the AE-86 Corolla, a small, lightweight, rear-wheel-drive coupe from the 1980s that has attained popular status. Toyota hopes to bring a new level of enthusiasm to their showrooms and customers, particularly targeting younger drivers who would appreciate the thrill of being behind the wheel of a sports-car. The Toyota FT-86G is the second concept revealed by Toyota in the past year that hints at a forthcoming sports coupe, featuring advancements to performance and styling that make it sleeker and bolder than the Toyota FT-86 concept demonstrated at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show. The "G" symbolises a sports conversion that has lengthened the vehicle by 30mm, widened it by 20mm and dropped it by 30mm (4190mm × 1780mm × 1230mm). Refreshed exterior features involve a redesigned front façade which incorporates a bigger air intake that showcases the intercooler, in addition to a vented bonnet. At the rear, a generous carbon-fibre wing, diffuser and oversized twin exhausts bring the crisp styling to another level. Riding on low-profile Bridgestone 19-inch wheels - 245/40 at the front and 275/35 at the rear - and Recaro sports seats, the Toyota FT-86G fills the tradition of a classic sports-car with a front-mounted 2.0 litre engine, now turbocharged, and a six-speed manual transmission. Toyota's mission to revive its sports-car legacy comes from global president Akio Toyoda who believes automakers should bring the fundamental excitement of automobiles to customers no matter the era. "It is often said that young people today have drifted away from cars, but I feel it may not be the customers who have drifted from cars but us, the manufacturers," Mr Toyoda said. "I believe it is the mission of auto makers to provide the fundamental excitement of automobiles to customers, regardless of the era."
