The Toyota RAV4 changed the UK 4x4 market when it made its debut in 1994. The journey to its launch was one of long anticipation, starting with early styling briefings in 1986, followed by concept car appearances at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1989 and 1993. Ultimately, the public got an exciting 'urban 4x4' with a monocoque design, making it the first production car that Toyota chose to give its world unveiling in Europe.
The sleek vehicle featured three doors, a 2.0-litre 16v petrol engine, permanent four-wheel drive and either manual or automatic transmissions. It was clear that the manufacturer had done its research, manufacturing an original and trend-setting product for the 'nineties. The Toyota RAV4's success is further exemplified by how little the car has changed since its launch.
