Toyota RAV4 EV Concept

At the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show, Toyota U.S.A., Inc. debuted the second-generation Toyota RAV4 EV Concept. Aiming to have a fully-engineered vehicle ready for market in 2012, 35 vehicles will be built for a demonstration and evaluation program over the next few years. It's expected to have a range of up to 100 miles and will be able to drive in a wide range of climates and conditions. Jim Lentz, president and chief operating officer of TMS, said that to unite with Tesla on the RAV4 EV, Toyota adopted a new development model with their "fast and flexible" engineering style. The project cut down on development time, and Toyota's Motor Engineering and Manufacturing North America Technical Center in Michigan took the lead. Essentially, Toyota took a mid-cycle RAV4 model and added a major powertrain option, as well as some minor feature and aesthetic changes. Tesla was responsible for the battery and related parts, which had to respond to some special specifications to fit the Toyota system. Toyota managed development and production, along with making sure the powertrain worked optimally.
