Following the success of the 67bhp 1.0-litre VVT-i Toyota Yaris, a bigger-engined 1.3-litre version made its debut at the 1999 Frankfurt Motor Show. This highly advanced engine, which has won the 'International Engine of the Year Award' for 1999, has been incorporated to bolster the performance of the GLS and CDX specification grades, as well as the more youthful SR grade. Consumers now have the option to equip a four speed automatic gearbox to GLS and CDX models equipped with the 1.3-litre engine. Since its launch, the Toyota Yaris has been a great success in the European market, with over 80,000 units sold in the first 3.5 months.
1.3-litre high-tech engine
The 1.3-litre 2NZ-FE engine's 75mm bore and 73.5mm stroke is outfitted with two overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder and the exclusive Toyota VVT-i system – which stands for Variable Valve Timing intelligent – for ultimate efficiency. This technology allows the engine to provide improved emissions, minimal noise, excellent fuel economy and impressive power. The 1.3-litre Toyota Yaris engine allows a maximum power output of 63kW (85bhp) at 6000rpm and a peak torque of 124 Nm (91 lb ft) of torque at 4400rpm. Even more notably, the flat torque curve offers an outstanding 111 Nm (82lb ft) of torque from 2400rpm up to 5400rpm; this offers greater flexibility in congested traffic or when overtaking, due to the designed combustion chambers and variable valve timing system.
