TVR Cerbera

The TVR Cerbera was a sports car produced by TVR between 1996 and 2003. The automobile got its name from the three-headed beast of Greek legend, Cerberus, which served as the watcher of the gates of the underworld. Prior to the TVR Cerbera, TVR utilized V8s from Rover, retuning them for its own use. However, RXO owner Peter Wheeler didn't want to deal with potential issues should BMW, who then owned Rover, discontinue producing the engine. He hired race engineer Al Melling to construct and design an in-house V8 engine, which could potentially be sold to other automakers. On an interview on the television show Top Gear, Wheeler explained, "Basically, we designed the engine as a race engine. It was my idea at the time that if we wanted to expand, we ought to make something that we could sell to other people. We've ended up with a 75-degree V8 with a flat-plane crank. The bottom-half of the engine to the heads is exactly as you would see in a current Formula One engine." When the car was unveiled, Wheeler claimed that the combination of light weight and high power was too much for the vehicle, garnering plenty of press coverage. To this day, people debate if this was an example of Wheeler's honesty or a PR stunt planned by TVR's PR manager Ben Samuelson. The engine, dubbed "Speed Eight" and officially given the designation 'AJP8' after its three engineers, was a 4.2 L V8, putting out 360 horsepower (268 kW). Later an enlarged version of the engine was available, enlarging the displacement to 4.5 liters and expanding the power to 420 horsepower (310 kW). This larger version was provided with a steel-made crankshaft to amplify the reliability and strength of the engine. The smaller iteration of the engine managed to propel the vehicle to speeds of up to 185 mph (297 km/h).
