Vauxhall Ampera
The revolutionary Vauxhall Ampera is Europe's first electrically driven automobile with zero-emission capability that can be used for everyday driving. Equipped with Voltec electric propulsion system, it offers lively acceleration and smooth driving along with a comfortable seating for four passengers, an ample boot capacity for their luggage and a range of over 300-miles. Frank Weber, GM global vehicle line executive and chief engineer believed "driving electrically is not only about ecology but also great fun with instantaneous torque of 370 Newton metres under your right foot".
The power to move the Vauxhall Ampera’s wheels is provided solely by electricity which is extracted from its 16-kWh lithium-ion battery, lasting up to 40-miles. As the battery conservatively runs out of energy, it transitions into a petrol or E85-fuelled engine-generator powered mode that sustains the charge of the battery and provides electricity for the electric drive unit, increasing the range of the car by many miles until it can be charged with a regular 240-volt outlet. It eliminates the "range anxiety" and provides the user with confidence and assurance while driving.
The battery technology is made possible and tested by GM's Engineers at their research and development centre in Germany; the nearly silent electric drive unit can generate up to 370 Nm of instant torque and enhanced with zero to 60 mph acceleration in around nine seconds and a top speed of 100mph.
In terms of cost efficiency, the Vauxhall Ampera had proven to cost roughly one-fifth of the current cost per mile of an equivalent petrol engined car, and found to be suited for the daily driving schedule of most customers, with an average of 30-miles commute.
