Vauxhall Astra Coupe

Released in 1998, the MK4 Vauxhall Astra Coupe addressed many of the criticisms of the previous MK3 in the UK market with vastly improved ride and handling. Increased body solidity for enhanced safety resulted in a Euro NCAP 4-star crash test rating – a feat considered excellent for its time. The UK variation of the MK4 Astra featured a range of 16v Ecotec engines as well as several 8v units. The 8v unit was subsequently refined to the Z16SE offering good performance while maintaining lower insurance criteria than that of the 16v equivalent. Along with the standard hatchback, the MK4 also popularized the coupé – available with 4 petrol engine types:
  • The 1.2 Z12XE producing 75 bhp (available in Ireland and other E. European countries only)
  • The 1.4 16v X14XE producing 88 bhp (66 kW; 89 PS)
  • The 1.6 8v X16SZR producing 75 hp, later the Z16SE producing 85 hp
  • The 1.6 16v producing 101 bhp (75 kW; 102 PS), later the 1.6 Twinport Z16XEP producing 105 bhp
  • The 1.8 X18XE1 producing 115 bhp, later the Z18XE producing 125 bhp (93 kW; 127 PS)
  • The 2.2 Z22SE producing 147 bhp (110 kW; 149 PS)
  • The 2.0 Turbocharged producing 189 bhp (141 kW; 192 PS) in the SRI Turbo and 197 bhp (147 kW; 200 PS) in the GSI Turbo Variant
Aside from the petrol-powered variants, the MK4 Astra also had diesel options:
  • The 1.7 DTi producing 75 bhp (56 kW; 76 PS)
  • The 1.7 CDTi producing 80 bhp (60 kW; 81 PS)
  • The 2.0 DTL 16v producing 85 bhp
  • The 2.0 DTi Y20DTH producing 100 bhp
