Vauxhall Astra Sport Hatch

The Astra Mark 5 Sport Hatch, which was launched in early 2004, soon became the flagship of the Astra range. It offered a unique “panoramic windscreen”, something no other production car had when it first came out. It was available in a variety of models, including Life, Club, Design, SXi, SRi, Elite and the impressive VXR, which boasted a very powerful 240 bhp engine. Special edition models such as Active, Energy, Breeze and VXR Nurburgring were also available. In terms of petrol models, drivers had the choice between a 1.4 90 bhp, 1.6 105 bhp or 115 bhp, 1.8 140 bhp, 1.6 Turbo and 2.0 litre Turbo (VXR). Diesel models included a 1.3 90 bhp, 1.7 with either 80 or 100 bhp and 1.9 with either 120 or 150 bhp, with all diesel models featuring the initials CDTI and most having 16 valves. The TwinTop 2-door coupé convertible was added to the range in 2006 and the Astra Mark 5 was unique in achieving a five-star Euro NCAP crash test rating. The five-door hatchback was replaced in late 2009 (though still available in 2010) and the Sport Hatch was not replaced until 2011. The MK5 was the most successful model of the Astra - Britain's second-best selling car in 2005, 2006 and 2007, closing in on the top-selling Ford Focus.
