Vauxhall Corsa

The Vauxhall Corsa was unveiled in 1993 with a curvier, more attractive body than before. As a result, the old Nova name was dropped in the UK and the car was known exclusively as the Corsa. The following year, it was launched by Holden in Australia and branded as the Barina. This launch was a success, making the Corsa the first Spanish-built car to be sold widely in Australia. The Corsa was offered in 1.2L, 1.4L and 1.6L gasoline engine Family 1 versions, as well as a 1.5L turbodiesel engine. Unfortunately for some, there was no sedan model, however a sedan was designed for the Latin American market, due to local preference for sedans over hatchbacks. Other form factors were also offered, including a station wagon, panel van, pick-up truck, coupé and budget version. A few European markets saw the wagon version being sold as an Opel, and in 1996 a 1.0L 3-cylinder Family 0 economy version was added. Similarly, Lotus-tuned suspension, exterior refresh and strong competition from new models like the Peugeot 206, Fiat Punto and Škoda Fabia were also introduced. The sedan model is still sold in Brazil as the Chevrolet Classic, and in Argentina as the Chevrolet Corsa Classic. A budget version, the Chevrolet Celta, is offered in Mexico, Colombia and other Latin American countries with bodywork resembling the Vectra and Astra of the late 1990s. GM Shanghai built and sold sedan and wagon versions of the Corsa in China as Buick Sails and Buick Sail S-RVs until 2005, when they were rebranded as Chevrolets. Chile will be the first country beyond China to receive the Chinese-assembled Sail in September 2006. It will be called the Chevrolet Corsa Plus, a four-door sedan version with a 1.6L engine (92cv) that includes standard double front airbags, ABS brakes, air conditioning, power windows and central locks. In India, the hatchback and wagon versions were sold as the Corsa Sail and Corsa Swing until the end of 2005. The hatchback model is also still produced and heavily marketed in South Africa as the Corsa Lite and Corsa Lite Plus.
