In 1998, the Commodore Coupé show car made its debut at the Sydney Motor Show. Referred to by journalists as the Monaro, Holden began to consider producing the show car as a result of the media response. After General Motors had invested A$60 million into a mere 22-month development phase - lower than the expected 12-18 months - the V2 series of Monaros were launched in 2001. Two models were available: the CV6 and the CV8 which each came outfitted with either a supercharged 3.8L V6 or a 5.7L Gen III V8, along with either a 6-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. The Monaro's impressive performance quickly made it one of the world's fastest stock cars. The series 2 model was released in early 2003 with a revised dashboard from the VY series Commodore, a new wheel design, and an altered selection of colours. The CV6 model, however, was discontinued after experiencing overwhelming sales of the CV8 - reputedly 10 times as many CV8s were built. The Series 3 model arrived in 2004. HSV soon after released the 'GTO' (255-297 kW) and 'GTS' (300 kW, tuned by Callaway) versions of the Monaro, now given the title of Coupe. The 'GTS' version was soon after removed, though a four-wheel drive version named the Coupe4 entered the market. Additionally, two special edition CV8-Rs of the Monaro were released - the first in a grey colour and the second in a red. Each had unique wheels and other distinguishing features. Of the Monaro models, the most impressive was the HRT 427 (Holden Racing Team 427ci). This supercar utilised a 7L C5R Chevrolet racing engine modified by HRT and HSV for the Australian coupe. With 420 Kw, it boasted peak performance, capable of accelerating from 0-62 mph in under 4 seconds - some say faster than a Ferrari 360 Modena or Lamborghini Gallardo. Unfortunately, due to its high production cost, the HRT 427 road car was discontinued. Yet a GT racecar version built off the Monaro went on to win the 2002 and 2003 Bathurst 24 hour Races against many world-class cars, including Porsche GT3's, the British Mosler MT900R, the Ferrari GT Modena, and the Lamborghini GT Racecar. This incredible victory included the 10th endurance race win at Bathurst for Holden touring car legend Peter Brock - an amazing achievement for a 60 year old. Had the HRT 427 road car been built, it may have held hero status much like the Falcon GT HO Phase III.
