Vauxhall Union Jack VX220

The Vauxhall VX220 is an exciting two-seater targa-topped car with a mid-engine setup introduced in 2001. It was produced in collaboration with GM and designed at Lotus Cars in Hethel, Norfolk, using the Elise S2 chassis that was modified to take a GM engine instead of the K-series Rover engine on the Elise. It is referred to by the internal model name Lotus 116 and its code name is 'Skipton'. Equipped with the Astra 2.2 L Ecotec L61 engine, the normally aspirated model produces 147 hp (110kW) while weighing in at only 870 kg. The Turbo model, developed in 2003, is powered by the 2.0 L Ecotec LSJ engine which gives an increased output of 200 hp (149kW) although it does slightly increase the weight to 930 kg. Additionally, a track-optimised VXR220 was released, based on the Turbo model, and tuned to provide approximately 220 hp (164kW). An additional design aspect of the VXR220 are the Lotus-style 16 inch (406 mm) front wheels, fitted with special sports tyres to enhance grip and performance. Praised by many motoring publications, the VX220 is an excellent performance car and was even recommended to be a better value option than its Lotus equivalent, particularly due to the exceptional 2.2 NA (normally aspirated) version. Sadly, it ceased production in 2005.
