The third-generation Volkswagen Golf was unveiled in November of 1991 and went on sale across North America in the spring of 1993. Volkswagen of America initially planned to produce the Mark III Golfs and Jettas from the VW plant in Puebla, Mexico; however, quality control issues were found in the vehicles produced at the plant, coupled with labor unrest at the plant, which caused a delayed release. Eventually, the Golf and Jetta were released in the San Diego, California area as 1993 models, with the rest of North America receiving the vehicles as 1994 models. Three-door Golfs were primarily available in North America as GTI models. This generation of the Volkswagen Golf was awarded "Car of the Year" in 1992, where for the first time, a station wagon derivative was offered. The GTI variant featured a four cylinder engine with a minimal increase in power, however the ‘Highline' VR6 model boasted a much higher output of 174 PS (128 kW/172 hp) with a 2.8 L engine. In addition, a convertible version of the Golf was produced, known as the Cabrio. In 1993, a 16-valve version of the Golf GTI entered the market; replacing the original GTI with a 2.0 L engine, and achieving a maximum power output of 150 PS (110 kW/148 hp). This new engine was not as powerful as the VR6 model, but was nonetheless appreciated by car enthusiasts in Europe. The Golf Driver version also provided a similar aesthetic to the GTI, while substituting a more modest single-point injected 1.8 L engine.
