The Volkswagen Golf I GTI is the successor to the legendary Beetle, of which over 21.5 million units were produced. Designed by Giorgio Giugiaro and Volkswagen Design, this modern car brings the new technology of transverse mounted front engine and front wheel-drive to the market. It was released in Wolfsburg in March 1974 and arrived in VW dealerships in May.
This car has a spacious interior and foldable rear seats. It is designed for practical use, with its low waist line making it easy to see the road ahead and the sloping front hood allowing for good visibility. It also comes with a drawn-down rear window, which makes reversing a breeze.
When it was first released, nobody knew if it was going to succeed the Beetle's sales. However, by October 1976, the one-millionth Golf unit was already being celebrated.
