Volkswagen Golf III GTI [UK]

In August 1991, Volkswagen launched the third generation Golf, which signalled a new era of safety. For the first time on the Golf series, front airbags were implemented from 1992, and significant advances in car body construction allowed for noteworthy improvements in crash safety. Consequently, this new Golf truly democratised passive safety, thereby benefiting millions of drivers across the globe. Apart from its safety features, the Golf III also brought numerous other innovations. It was the first to include a VR6 six cylinder engine, cruise control, oxidation catalytic converters for diesel engines (1991), direct injection diesel engines (TDI/SDI in 1993 and 1995, respectively), side airbags (1996) and ABS as a standard feature on all models (1996). Additionally, 1993 saw the launch of a Golf III convertible, a new all-wheel drive model (Syncro II) and the first Golf Variant estate. The immense success of the third generation in 1994 was commemorated with the production of the 15-millionth Golf. The Golf III generation drew to a close in 1997, with a total of 4.83 million units produced, or 0.81 million per year. The roots of the third Golf can be dated back to 1985. When its official launch took place, it was a groundbreaking innovation which included a fresh design consisting of a slight wedge shape, featuring a subtle shoulder between the front and rear lights to give it a contemporary look. As Herbert Schäfer, the Chief Designer, expressed at the time, the Golf III emphasised design as opposed to the upgrade between Golf I and II which mainly consisted of more powerful engines and improved handling. The Golf III was the first with oval headlights, two of the Volkswagen Golf GTI's twin headlights connected internally to give it an iconic shape. This was all underlain by a wide track and aerodynamic body, with a drag coefficient of 0.30. Whether in the Golf III or more recent editions, anyone can easily recognise the Volkswagen Golf due to its distinct design, and appreciate the timelessness which the Golf series has continued to deliver.
