Volkswagen Golf IV 1997 posters

Volkswagen Golf IV

Launched in 1997, the Golf IV was the fourth iteration of Volkswagen's iconic model and it quickly became the biggest selling car in Europe. This new model was Volkswagen's deliberate attempt to move the Golf up-market, and this was evidenced through its improved interior and higher equipment levels. Also, its design was more mature, with Volkswagen dropping humorous plays such as "Golf Ryder," "Golf Driver," and the iconic "golf ball" gearlever knob.

Design and engineering

The Golf IV signalled a leap forward for Volkswagen in the class. It was a cheaper alternative to premium models, yet its interior quality and sophistication rivalled the Audi A3. Similarly, its unique styling themes, which had been previously featured on the B4 Passat, gave the car more refined aesthetics. The one downside to the model was its chassis; it was considered to be average and was inferior to the much praised Mk IV Vauxhall Astra/Mk II Opel Astra. However, with daily driving the average dynamics were generally well concealed. Unfortunately, the Golf IV was never produced in a convertible version. In its place, Volkswagen gave the Golf III Cabrio a facelift to replicate the frontal aesthetics of the Golf IV hatchback.
