Volkswagen NILS Concept 2011 posters

Volkswagen NILS Concept

The Volkswagen NILS concept car has been unveiled to the public, offering a new form of minimalist mobility. With an aluminium space frame, wing doors and free-standing wheels, the vehicle has sports car-like performance, but runs on silent and with zero emissions. The project has the support of the German Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development, with the goal of achieving technically spherical and economically supportable results. Prof. Dr. Jürgen Leohold, Head of Volkswagen Group Research, 'The NILS project anticipates the future, with the mission of researching a minimalist vehicle for individual transportation that is both efficient and eco-friendly.' Dr. Rudolf Krebs, Group Chief Officer for Electric Traction, provides a strategic perspective: 'The breakthrough of electric mobility will lead to new requirements, and the Volkswagen Group seeks to create high-volume production on electric vehicles'. Volkswagen NILS has a range of 65 kilometres (40 miles) and a top speed of 130 km/h (80 mph). Statistics show that most commuters in between Berlin and Munich travel less than 25 kilometres (15.5 miles) to work - making the vehicle an ideal choice for the majority.
