Volkswagen New Beetle Sport Edition

At the 1994 North American International Auto Show, Volkswagen introduced the "Concept 1", a concept car with styling that paid homage to the iconic original Beetle. That car went into production as the Volkswagen New Beetle in 1998. With the engine in the front and storage in the back, in contrast to the classic Beetle, the new car was based on the Volkswagen Golf platform and was assembled at the VW Puebla factory in Mexico. Concept 1 The car came with 17-inch wheels, recognizable by the VW logo (just like the original beetle hubcap), low-profile tires and a battery-powered, zero-emission hybrid concept. The fuel consumption of the Concept 1 was 2L. New Beetle The New Beetle featured a cabriolet design, with a rounded shape, retaining the flowing lines of the sedan, and alluding to the more chic looks of the original Beetle cabriolet. It was designed by J Mays and Freeman Thomas at the company's California design studio and was met with a positive public reaction. In the US, the new model gained widespread goodwill thanks to various marketing campaigns and, as a result, the car earned “Motor Trend's Import Car of the Year" title for 1999. In Europe, however, the car was considered a flop. Two years after launch, Volkswagen started producing a convertible version of the New Beetle, after many buyers had requested aftermarket conversions. For the 2006 model, the exterior was slightly redesigned with bigger bumpers and it was fitted with a 2.5L 150hp I5 base engine, as seen on the A5 Jetta.
