Volkswagen Passat 1993 posters

Volkswagen Passat Variant

The third generation Passat was an all-new car when it was introduced in Europe in 1988 and North America in 1990. With its curvy "Jelly Mould" style, inspired by Ford's Sierra, and a lack of grille, it bore a resemblance to rear-engined Volkswagens such as the 411. It was the first Passat to be built on its own platform -- the A Platform for the smaller Golf model -- and was offered only as a sedan or station wagon, without the fastback option of previous models. To power the car, fuel injected engines replaced the carburettor units and were mounted transversely. Additionally, the platform was engineered to accommodate VW's Syncro four-wheel drive system. With the addition of a 2.8 V6 VR6 engine, the top-of-the-range Passat could reach a top speed of 224 km/h (139 mph). 1993 facelift In 1993, the Mk 3 Passat received a facelift and became known as the Mk IV Passat (or B4). Volkswagen updated the exterior and interior designs, and for the first time, the car was equipped with dual front airbags. A TDI diesel engine -- an inline 4 cylinder 1.9 L turbo diesel with 210 N·m (155 ft·lbf) of torque at 1900 rpm and 90 PS (66 kW) at 3750 rpm -- was also made available. North American customers especially appreciated this version of the Passat for its fuel efficiency (45 mpg on highways), resulting in a respectable 1300+ km (800+ mi) range on a single tank of fuel. The B4 TDI wagon (aka "Variant") was even rarer, with fewer than 1000 imported to the US in 1996 and 1997.
