Volkswagen Passat Variant 1988 posters

Volkswagen Passat Variant

The Volkswagen Passat Variant, third generation of the of the Volkswagen Passat, was a completely new car. Its curvy looks and lack of a grille made the car's front end styling reminiscent of older, rear-engined Volkswagens like the 411. Making it the first Passat to be built on its own platform (the "B3" in VW's platform nomenclature, with the A platform being used for the Golf model), the car was made available in sedan and station wagon versions, with fuel injected engines providing better performance and refinement than the carburettor units. It was released in 1988 in Europe and two years later in North America. In 1993, the Mk 3 Passat was heavily facelifted, and became known as Mk IV passat, with VW renaming the platform B4. It featured an updated design and improved safety equipment, with dual front airbags being included from 1995 to 1997 in North America. The TDI diesel engine was also launched for the North American market, offering a fuel efficiency rating of 45 mpg highway (5.2 L/100 km) and a range of 1300+ km (800+ mi) on one tank of fuel. The B4 TDI wagon (often referred to as the "Variant") is a rarer model, with fewer than 1000 being imported to the US over its two year lifespan.
