Volkswagen Passat Variant
The fourth-generation Volkswagen Passat (also known as the 5th generation), launched in Europe in 1996 and North America in 1998, was an all-new, ground-up design. It marked a return to the classic "overhung" longitudinal engine and front wheel drive, which it shared with the first-generation Audi A4 (1994).
The Passat set a new standard for a mainstream car in its class, with interior quality comparable to the more expensive Audi A4. Priced £1,000 higher than the equivalent Ford Mondeo, it offered luxury and an upmarket feel rarely seen at the time in cars of this class.
The Passat revolutionised its class, forcing mainstream competitors to raise their game with higher quality interiors and better features. 2000's Ford Mondeo was the first to demonstrate the effect of the Mk 4 Passat, and while cheaper competitors have yet to catch up, their prices reflect this. Volkswagen followed suit the next year in the class below with the Mk IV Volkswagen Golf.
