Volkswagen Passat W8 Variant
The Volkswagen Passat W8 Variant is part of the fourth-generation Passat (sometimes referred to as the 5th generation Passat or the B5 platform), first launched in Europe in 1996 and North America in 1998. This was a brand new car design, and was noted for its "overhung" longitudinally mounted engine with front wheel drive. It was a significant move for Volkswagen as it aimed to plug the gap between their mainstream machines and the premium cars, with the interior quality and sophistication being on a par with the more expensive Audi A4.
This caused a great shift in the automotive market: as a result of the Mk 4 Passat, the interior quality of mainstream rivals in the class had to be raised, all while some budget brands stayed lower, although this was reflected in their prices. Volkswagen replicated the same game in the class below with the release of the Mk IV Volkswagen Golf in 1997. Thus, now mainstream and premium cars in the class have virtually the same level of quality. The Ford Mondeo was an example of this, with the 2000 version being the first car to prove the Passat's effect.
