Volkswagen Phaeton 2002 posters

Volkswagen Phaeton

The Volkswagen Phaeton (pronounced "fay-ton"), is a large luxury sedan designed to compete with other high-end flagships such as the BMW 7-Series or Mercedes-Benz S-Class. It takes its name from Phaëton, the son of Helios in Greek mythology. The car is the brainchild of former VW chairman Ferdinand Piëch, and is recognized as the brand's current flagship model. It shares a number of components with the Audi A8, Bentley Continental GT, and Bentley Continental Flying Spur, and features a hand-assembled interior. The Phaeton has two wheelbase sizes - the Standard Wheelbase measures 5055mm in length, 1903mm in width, 1450mm in height, and 2881mm in wheelbase; the Long Wheelbase measures 5175mm in length, 1903mm in width, 1450mm in height, and 3001mm in wheelbase. When it was introduced in the United States in 2004, the Phaeton has failed to generate enough sales. Volkswagen even offered a $10,000 buyer incentive yet only 1,433 units were sold in 2004, and only 820 in 2005. The car is priced at $66,700 for the V8 version and $96,700 for the W12 version - both of which include gas-guzzler taxes. Many attribute this low sales to the North American market's view of Volkswagen as an "economy" marque.
