Volkswagen Phaeton V10 TDI

The Volkswagen Phaeton (pronounced "fay-ton") is a large luxury sedan manufactured by Volkswagen and is its flagship model. It was the brainchild of Volkswagen chairman Ferdinand Piëch who believed it would give the VW brand greater prestige. It takes its name from Phaëton, the son of Helios in Greek mythology. The Phaeton's platform is shared with the Audi A8, Bentley Continental GT, and Bentley Continental Flying Spur. The Phaeton has the longest wheelbase in the VW passenger model line and is hand-assembled in the distinctive Gläserne Manufaktur glass factory in Dresden, Germany. The Standard Wheelbase version measures 5055mm in length, 1903mm in width, 1450mm in height, and 2881mm in wheelbase. The Long Wheelbase version measures 5175mm in length, 1903mm in width, 1450mm in height, and 3001mm in wheelbase. In 2004, the Phaeton was introduced in the United States and received an over $10,000 buyer incentive, but went on to sales figures of only 820 in 2005. This has been attributed to customers who, historically, have seen Volkswagen as an economy marque. The V8 version is listed at $66,700 with a $1,300 gas-guzzler tax while the W12 version is listed at $96,700 with a $3,000 gas-guzzler tax.
