Volkswagen Polo 1982 posters

Volkswagen Polo

The Volkswagen Polo was introduced in October 1981 as a revised model (Mk II). It included two body styles - the Wagon, with a steep rear window, and the Coupé, with a diagonal window and similar profile to the previous model. The sedan version was called the Polo Classic instead of the previously used Derby. Volkswagen expanded production of the Polo to Spain in the mid 1980s. The Mk II Polo was available with 1093 cc or 1272 cc engines at launch, and received numerous technical improvements in 1986. This included a 1043 cc engine to replace the 1093 cc, and a 1.3 L engine with fuel injection and catalytic converter in some markets. The Polo's "coupé" style featured a sportier look, with additions such as sporting seats trim, wheel arch extensions, a rear spoiler, low profile tyres, and a rev counter. The GL model included a 60 PS (44nbsp;kW) engine, while the higher-powered Coupé GT featured a 75 PS (55 kW) engine along with servo assisted brakes, twin headlights, a digital clock, sports seats, and a rev counter. Other special feature models included the Twist, Parade, and Country. In 1987, Volkswagen introduced the supercharger-equipped GT G40 version. This car featured the 1272 cc engine with a small bore G-Lader supercharger, giving 113 PS (83 kW) at 6000 rpm, as well as modified suspension and the bodywork of the "normal" GT Coupé. However, the prototyped 2-cylinder diesel with a G40 supercharger did not make production. The high fuel efficiency Formel E model, introduced in 1983, did make production. It featured a high compression 1272 cc engine, longer gear ratios, and a unique stop-start ignition system, called SSA, which cut the engine when idle for more than two seconds and restarted when the driver moved the gear lever into neutral. Similar systems were later adopted by other car manufacturers.
