Volkswagen Polo Fun
The all-new 9N (Mk IV) model of the Volkswagen Polo, which was launched in September of 2001 and put on sale in the beginning of 2002, bears more structural resemblance to the 6K model than its predecessor the 6M. One of its more recognisable differences is that it features a pair of quad round headlights similar to those of the VW Lupo. At 3.90m, the new model is longer than the first generation of its larger sibling, the 3.82m Mk 1 Golf.
The model was available with a few engine options, with a 1.2L three cylinder engine offering either 55PS (40kW) or 64kW (47kW) of power, or a 16-valve 1.4L 4-cylinder available in two versions, issuing either 75PS (55kW) or 100PS (74kW). It was also released with the new TDI PD units, a 1.9L with a power output of 100PS (74kW) and a three-cylinder 1.4L model (with one cylinder less than the 1.9L) boasting 75PS (55kW), as well as a Polo GT model with 130PS (96kW).
The Polo had the norm of features from the Comfortline to the Trendline and Highline, as well as an array of extras that had become commonplace in mid-sized small cars, such as ABS, power steering, front and side air bags and front and rear head restraints, which were all standard on every model. Optional additional equipment includes ESP, brake assistance, air conditioning and satellite navigation, among other features, that were available on higher spec models.
The Polo Fun (Polo Dune in the UK) was a version of the car designed with mini SUV styling, although the car was never available with four wheel drive. The Polo Classic, a sedan variant, was produced in certain countries including Brazil, South Africa, and China. The Chinese version was the first Chinese-built car with a right hand drive.
The Polo was not a great success in the UK, as it finished in the bottom 10 of the Top Gear survey in 2005, being surpassed only by the Fiat Punto in the category of superminis.
