Volkswagen Polo Sedan 2003 posters

Volkswagen Polo Sedan

The Volkswagen Polo Sedan was first released in September 2001 as the fourth version of the Mk IV model. It was built using the SEAT Ibiza Mk 3 and Škoda Fabia's platform for floor pan sharing, and had structural similarities to the Mk 1 Golf. Its major visible difference was the inclusion of quad round headlights similar to the Volkswagen Lupo. Stretching to 3.90 m, it was larger than the first-generation predecessor, the 3.82 m Mk 1 Golf. It included several engine options, such as the 1.2 L three cylinder engine with 55 PS (40 kW) or 64 kW (47 kW) depending on the number of valves per cylinder, a 16-valve 1.4 L 4-cylinder with 75 or 100 (55 or 74 kW), and new TDI PD units. The 1.9 L had 100 PS (74 kW), while the three-cylinder 1.4 L model had 75 PS (55 kW). Later in 2004, a 1.9 TDI PD model called the Polo GT with 130 PS (96 kW) was released. The model range consisted of the Comfortline, Trendline and Highline. Each came standard with ABS, power steering, front and side airbags and front & rear head restraints. Optional items included ESP, brake assistance, air conditioning and satellite navigation for higher spec models. Apart from the sedan, a mini SUV version called the Polo Fun (Polo Dune in the UK) was also released. While it had an offroad styling, it was never available with four-wheel drive. The Chinese version of the Polo became the first Chinese-built car with a right-hand drive. The sales were disappointing in the UK, with the car finishing bottom 10 in the Top Gear survey in the supermini sector. The only car more disappointing to own was the Fiat Punto.
