The Volkswagen Scirocco is a two-door sports coupé that has revolutionised the car industry since it was first unveiled at the 1974 Geneva Motor Show. It played a significant role in the production of the original Golf. More than three decades later, the third generation of this iconic car has just hit the shelves.
The new Scirocco features a longer and wider body than the VW Golf GTI, but is nearly ten centimetres lower, giving it a sporty appeal. Its striking front features a Volkswagen roundel that is now situated on the bonnet, a design choice that is sure to define the future of Volkswagen's styling.
At launch in the UK market in 2008, there was only one engine option available - a 2.0-litre TSI with 200 PS in GT specification. Currently, there are four engine choices: 1.4-litre TSI petrol (160 PS), and two 2.0-litre common rail TDI diesels (140 and 170 PS), along with a lower trim level. All Sciroccos come fitted with Adaptive Chassis Control, enabling the driver to select one of three car settings – Comfort, Sport and Normal – which alters the suspension, steering and accelerator response. Additionally, ABS with ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme), six airbags, alloy wheels and air conditioning (2Zone electronic climate control on GT models) come as standard, and buyers can choose to upgrade to include a panoramic sunroof, leather trim and a touchscreen satellite navigation system.
