Volkswagen Scirocco Studie R Concept

It was an impressive display of power: in May 2008 three VW Scirocco GT24 cars were lined up at the start of the 24-hour endurance race at the Nürburgring. Driven by renowned drivers such as Hans-Joachim Stuck and Carlos Sainz, the vehicles secured an impressive double victory at the finish line, taking the first and second positions in their class. Now Volkswagen is presenting a version of the race cars to the public at the 2008 Bologna Motor Show: the Volkswagen Scirocco Studie R Concept. This 'Grand Tourismo' has an engine with a power output of 198 kW / 270 PS, and features a 6-speed dual clutch transmission to optimally distribute this power. Influenced by its racing heritage, the concept car is fitted with coilovers, four-piston brake calipers and an exhaust system with oval and polished tailpipes. Visually, the concept follows suit from its race car predecessor. The front end is characterised by an emphasis on 'form following function' with three large air inlet openings to help cool the brakes and engine, while a front splitter keeps aerodynamic lift at the front axle to a minimum. The engine hood is also adopted from the race car version and features auxiliary air vents. At the rear of the car there is an integrated rear wing and a distinctive diffuser in the lower section of the bumper, both of which help to reduce lift at the rear. The car still looks unmistakably like the production Scirocco, as evidenced by its side profile with new side skirts and 19-inch alloy wheels with five sets of triple spokes (specially developed for this concept). The radiator screen, diffuser and underside of the rear spoiler are all in high-gloss black, making for a striking contrast to the white exterior paint (with red and green accents to emulate Italy's national tricolor). Interior The inside of the car reflects the exterior's Italian tricolor theme, with a black and white base and red and green detailing on the Recaro racing shell seats, steering wheel, gearshift lever trim and floor mat edging. The inside of the uncompromisingly designed racing seats are upholstered with a deep black leather with a carbon look, and there are also real carbon composite accents. The footwell features aluminum pedals specifically designed for this model.
