Volkswagen Sharan
The Volkswagen Sharan is a large MPV that has been produced by German automaker Volkswagen since 1995. It is produced in a joint venture with Ford Motor Company, where they both sell their own version of the same car as the VW Sharan and Ford Galaxy. SEAT, VW's Spanish subsidiary, also sells a variant of the same car called the Alhambra. Annual production of the VW Sharan is in the 50,000 unit region, and all three models are built in Palmela, Portugal.
The name Sharan is derived from a Persian word meaning "Carrier of Kings". The joint venture project between VW and Ford to create the Sharan/Galaxy first started in 1991, and the two carmakers finally revealed their twins in late 1994. Production began in early 1995, and SEAT released the Alhambra in 1996.
Today, the Sharan is sold mainly throughout Europe, South Africa, and in parts of Asia-Pacific and South American countries. However, it is not sold in North America, due to an agreement between Ford and Volkswagen. The MPVs all got a major facelift in 2000, with their own unique designs.
