Volkswagen Space Up Blue Concept

Volkswagen has unveiled its latest concept in the up! family of vehicles: the space up! blue, at the Los Angeles Motor Show. Drawing inspiration from the classic 1950s Samba Bus, the space up! blue is powered by a pioneering high-temperature fuel cell coupled with a series of 12 lithium-ion batteries. The battery-powered space up! blue has a range of 65 miles, while the fuel cell can increase the range to 220 miles - making it one of the most efficient drivetrain designs available. The powertrain is fully integrated with a bank of solar panels in the roof of the car, which ensures that the lithium-ion batteries remain charged. Furthermore, the high temperature technology used in the fuel cell is highly efficient, requiring less cooling and packaging than a conventional low-temperature fuel cell and helping to reduce costs. When running on battery alone, the space up! blue can reach 60 mph in 13.7 seconds and reach a maximum speed of 75 mph. The exterior design of the space up! blue retains the signature mix of clean surfaces and sharp, cohesive lines that form the look of the up! family. It also includes glass skylights on the roof and butterfly doors that open from both A- and C-pillars. Inside, recycled materials are used along with advanced touchscreen interfaces. Despite its generous interior space, the vehicle measures just 3680 mm long, 1569 mm high and 1630 mm wide. Development of production versions of this concept vehicle is underway, with a road-going version planned by the end of the decade.
