Volkswagen Touareg Expedition
The Volkswagen Touareg is a luxury 4x4 (US: SUV) automobile manufacturered by the German-based automotive giant. It was the first of its class of vehicles to be produced by Volkswagen and is built on the Volkswagen E platform, which was co-developed with Porsche, who also wanted to add an SUV to their lineup. The Touareg replaced the Eurovan for North America as the company's truck and reviews for the model have been excellent. Car and Driver magazine dubbed it Best Luxury SUV for 2003, Motor Trend named it Sport/Utility of the Year for 2004, "Four Wheeler" magazine honoured it with Four Wheeler of the Year for 2005, and Overlander's recognied it as their 2003 4WDOTY.
The Touareg is offered with a number of engine options, including a 174 PS (128 kW, 172 hp) 2.5 L diesel I5, a 225 PS (165 kW, 225 hp) 3.0 L diesel V6, 500 N·m (369 ft·lbf), a 240 PS (177 kW, 236 hp) 3.2 L gasoline V6, a 310 PS (228 kW, 305 hp) 4.2 L gasoline V8, a 313 PS (230 kW, 308 hp) 5.0 L diesel V10, 750 N·m (550 ft·lbf), and a limited edition 450 hp (331 kW) 6.0 L gasoline W12, 599 N·m (442 ft·lbf). The powerful 5.0 L diesel V10, for instance, can propel the Touareg from 0-62 mph (100 km/h) in 7.8 seconds and on to 130 mph (230 km/h) maximum. This engine was temporarily de-listed from US markets due to emission standards, but Volkswagen have been working hard to address the issue, and the engine is slated for a return in 2006.
