Volkswagen W12 Coupe Concept

The Volkswagen Nardo, widely known as the W12 Coupe, was a revolutionary concept car put together by Italdesign and the Volkswagen team back in 1997. It was created to demonstrate Volkswagen's impressive engineering capabilities, specifically with regards to VW's luxury model, the Phaeton, and its SUV, the Touareg. The car came with a powerful 5.8L W12 engine which boasted 309kW (420bhp) and was paired with VW's Syncro AWD system. At the Tokyo Motor Show of 1997, Volkswagen impressed the world with two prototypes: a bright yellow W12 Coupe and a red W12 Roadster. The latter featured a rear-wheel drive. Four years later, at the Tokyo Motor Show, VW unveiled their most powerful W12 supercar with a 441kW (512hp) engine and a speed of 214mph (350 km/h). To prove its potential, a carbon fiber unpainted version took part in the Nardo Circuit near Lecce, Italy and set 7 world 24-hour speed records. That's where the car got its nickname from.
