Volkswagen XL1 Concept
The Volkswagen XL1 Concept is a revolutionary design that seeks to provide an answer to the question of how much cars' energy consumption could be reduced with advances in technology. Volkswagen has achieved a combined fuel consumption of 0.9 l/100km, the lowest yet for a hybrid car that combines an electric motor and an internal combustion engine. The car was first showcased to the world in January 2011 at the Qatar Motor Show.
The XL1 concept represents the third stage of Volkswagen's 1-litre car strategy, inspired by Prof. Dr. Ferdinand Piëch, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Volkswagen AG. His goal in the early 2000s was to create a production car that could achieved an astonishing feat - an average fuel consumption of 1.0 litre per 100 km. The XL1 has delivered on that ambition with its CO2 emissions rating of 24 g/km.
This outstanding result is due to its innovative design, which uses a combination of lightweight monocoque and carbon fibre construction to reduce drag and a plug-in hybrid system for its power source. The system is made up of a two cylinder TDI engine, E-motor, 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and lithium-ion battery. It can be run for 35 kilometres in electric-only mode with zero emissions, and the battery can be charged from a household socket. Power is harnessed from braking and converted into electricity as part of the battery regeneration system.
