Volvo C30 BEV

Volvo presented its first electric car prototype in September 2009, and at the 2010 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the company debuted the Volvo C30 BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) featuring a complete interior and full instrumentation, as well as enhanced battery packaging. According to Lennart Stegland, Director of Volvo Cars Special Vehicles, "[t]he first prototype [helped] us identify the main technological challenges, such as battery packaging and safety issues. We have addressed these challenges without compromising the Volvo C30's cool and fun-to-drive personality. I am very happy with the result. The electric Volvo C30 BEV in Detroit is a much more complete product." In 2010, Volvo plans to manufacture a series of test cars that will be driven by selected users in a two-year trial period to provide Volvo Cars with valuable information regarding the features and driving habits of electric cars. Additionally, the Swedish Energy Agency is contributing SEK 150 million towards the project's funding. Stigland states that "the test fleet data will be valuable in Volvo Cars' development of electric cars. It will also provide crucial input for the infrastructure planners and help define which services are needed to make rechargeable cars the most attractive choice in the future." With the valuable field data received throughout the two-year trial period, Volvo will have the opportunity to further develop the Volvo C30 to make it even more efficient and enjoyable to drive.
